Purchasing a Property

The Legal Processes

You found your dream home, price is right, and the seller has signed your Offer to Purchase, once signed by both the seller and buyer it becomes a Deed of Sale. A new provision recently introduced into South Africa property law is the cooling off period, which enables inexperienced buyers to cancel the Offer to Purchase within 5 days. This applies to residential properties costing less than R250 000.

UK Growth Fastest in Three Years but What's Next

How Fast is the UK Growing?

According to the Official for National Statistics (ONS), the UK’s total economic output as measured by gross domestic product (GDP), rose by 0.8% between the months of July and September. The ONS commented on how all sectors have performed reasonably well in the recent times.

While the 0.8% increase might not seem significant, it is for the UK economy. It is the fastest quarterly growth the UK has seen since 2010, building on the 0.7% increase after the second quarter. George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said, “[Britain] is on the path to prosperity” with the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg claiming “we are firmly on the road to recovery”.

Equities versus Bonds

Which is Better

For the purpose of clarification, we will define equities as shares in publicly-listed and traded companies (i.e. Stocks). Bonds may also be bought from public companies but could simply be government bonds bought from the government. Both stocks and bonds have their advantages and disadvantages. Usually investors will find a balance between stocks and bonds, to balance out their risks and returns.

Is China Mobile worth buying into

China Mobile Inc. (NYSE:CHL) has been at the receiving end of some cynical comments regarding its perceived incapability to bring the desired iPhone to its network. Indeed, commentators writing on the Chinese government-run telecom giant also noted that other telecom companies, which have been paying fees for leasing China Mobile's services, are now paying less.

Image credit: viewstock / 123RF Stock Photo

However, this commentary ignores the simple fact that China Mobile is the dominant player in the Chinese telecom space. Further, its balance sheet and the dynamics of the Chinese market are still heavily in its favor as the following analysis will show. Coupled with its future prospects, these factors make any anxiety regarding the Chinese company's future highly unwarranted.

Is BestBuy still a buy

Best Buy Inc. (NYSE:BBY) hasn't had a fabulous time for the past few years. Faced with growing competition from the online retailers like Amazon, Best Buy's revenues had been shrinking steadily, leading many to wonder if the company would be finally falling on its face. Since it specializes in electronic goods, it did not enjoy the benefits of diversification that Wal-Mart has, especially products, which shoppers would be trying out before buying. However, with the coming of Hubert Joly, matters have taken a different turn, and the company's stocks have been steadily rising. While this itself shows that Best Buy still has the potential, one needs to take a closer look at the company's current status and future possibilities before jumping onto the bandwagon.

Promote employee health in the workplace

It is truly no surprise that workers who are physically and mentally healthy have better attendance rates and are more enthusiastic and productive than employees who are not. Employees who do not look after their health often perform poorly than their colleagues and prolonged ill-health leading to absence can have a negative effect on a team’s morale and overall performance. It is, therefore, essential that businesses ensure that they are providing a working environment that helps to maintain a healthy workforce.

US economic stalemate

Why and how it will affect other economies

While the US may be exceptional due to a variety of reasons, one particular reason Americans are not feeling proud of - is their leaders' ability to shutdown the government. Following a long drawn conflict over the Affordable Care Act (colloquially called Obamacare), the Republicans have refused to ratify the federal budget, thus depriving the government of the resources it needs to continue running. While the politics itself is extremely complicated, our interest lies with the impact it will have on the world economy since the US economy is vital to the global financial system.

To understand this; however, we need a quick review of the impact the US shutdown will have on the US economy since the impact on the world will be an indirect effect of these -

With the economy going up and down, you never know when you may need to spruce up your old resume. There may be a new job opportunity available, or a loss of a job may leave you in need of another.  However, when the economy isn’t doing as well, it usually means there are a lot of people who are applying for the same job that you are. Is the US economy on the rebound

The question that has been hounding every American since the collapse of Lehman Brothers – can the US tread upon the road to economic recovery? In the past half decade, the outlook among economists has been mostly negative – almost stagnant (or negative) growth, higher unemployment, low consumer demand and even lower industrial production. Perhaps the best evidence of this lack of trust has been the three QE (Quantitative Easing) packages that the US Fed has fed the markets with. Recently, there were rumors that the Fed may finally scale down the QE3.
That the Fed finally did not is common knowledge, but this does not mean the gloom which once surrounded the US economy has remained constant. In the past year alone, changes have been taking place which, in part, led to the rumors of a QE3 rollback in the first place.  To evaluate these changes, however, we need objective criteria against which to evaluate them. The criteria for economic recovery are:

How Much House Can You Afford

When prospective homeowners think about buying a house, many only consider elements such as the size and style of the house, what kind of community they would like, and how far away it would be from their work or their children’s schools. Quite surprisingly, worrying about just how much house they can afford for some reason goes to the bottom of the list. But it shouldn't. Using a mortgage calculator in order to figure out how much “house” can be afforded is necessary so that a potentially enormous financial burden is not imposed on the new homeowner. Here is a list of tips you should take into consideration in order to stay out of monetary trouble.

How savings have evolved over the years

When you think of savings, the first thing that comes to your mind is probably, your own little piggy bank, where you accumulate cash, to pull out every time you need money abruptly. We all use a piggy bank at some point of time before we move onto opening a savings bank account. Banks have created a plethora of possibilities to save earned money. Recurring and Fixed or term deposits are quite popular among account holders, and it is also the most secured kind of investment.

Can the US bring the jobs back it lost to emerging economies

Ask anyone when they last purchased a product with “Made in USA” written on it, and chances are the person will be at a loss. This is the result of the oft-quoted term “outsourcing”, by which companies, seeking bigger profit margins and reduced production hassles, sought to relocate some (or all) of their units in countries which offered them the right incentives and labor costs – China, India, Vietnam, etc. This was followed by the exodus of good engineers and skilled workers, who could no longer find telling US jobs, thereby creating a brain drain.

Popular rhetoric blames this exodus on the companies' endless greed, but the real reasons are more complex:

What the RBI did and did not do right

In times of economic crisis, it is easier to target the State's financial institutions, of which the most influential and powerful is the Central Bank. In case of the Indian economy, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been at the receiving end of criticism, as well as some praise, for the way in which it has so far handled the economic storms of 2012-13. Before we can pass judgment on how correct RBI's measures were, we need to take a look at what the key issues were, and what were the limitations on the RBI's powers.

What to do in a spooked market

 An investor's guide

Investing in the stock market can be scary in itself, and surviving a spooked market can be downright terrifying. The unfortunate news is that markets (especially after 2008) have become more vulnerable to developments – like financial changes at home and abroad, economic performance data, currency performance and political factors – and there appears little chance of markets becoming bullish enough to shrug off such happenings.

Image credit: lightwise / 123RF Stock Photo

Generally, a spooked market witnesses one or more of the following:

  • Rapid selling by foreign (and domestic) players, which pushes the currency – and stocks – down.
  • Panicking investors seek better options like gold, etc; they end up selling a majority of the stocks at a loss.
  • The rapid selling of stocks pushes the stock market further down.

It is, therefore, essential that you ensure you do not, in any case, fall under this category. You may have been an excellent student and may have gotten grades that would make your friends and family speechless. Everyone who works in the office can get tired working hard over a period of time. Yet, there’s no respite, they have to continue working hard to keep the image intact. In spite of all the engaging responsibilities one has in the office, many still finds a way to skip their work and find leisure time amidst hectic schedule.

Image credit: leaf / 123RF Stock Photo

In the older times, when there was no gadget around, employees would do strange things to take it easy. Some would hide a gripping novel under their desk and squeeze few pages in between, and they would be extremely cautious not to let others see them. Times have changed though, and with the advent of gadgets, employees can make their life less difficult and more enjoyable.

Lawsuits against Mastercard and Visa

For monopolizing the credit card industry

In 1996, a compilation of merchants gathered a class action lawsuit against Mastercard and Visa Associations. These merchants contended that Mastercard and Visa were using the offline debit transactions for higher rates than the online transactions. They also state that the card companies were forcing them to accept the debit transactions at a higher rate than the credit transactions

Misconceptions about wine investment

People have been investing in wine for centuries. With the current ups and downs of the financial world, the wine market upholds its enormous value. In spite of earning regular yields of 10-20%+ per year and exceeding blue-chip stocks for the last 150 years, several potential investors are not convinced that fine wine is a worthwhile investment. Are you among those investors who think fine wine is a troubling business? Then it’s time to set some things straight as most assumptions are baseless.

Mature wines tastes fantastic and are more valuable

Nearly all wines made today are aimed to be consumed within the year they’re bottled. Red wines usually last for four years until they get rid of flavor but rose wines, with very few exceptions, ought to be consumed within a year. You may not know this, but very few wines will improve their taste and flavor in time.

5 Habits of a Successful Real Estate Investor

Becoming a successful real estate investor or a real estate mogul is not something that you achieve by a passing chance. It is the cumulative result of years of hard work and discipline that becomes a habit after some point of time. If you want to emulate and achieve what Donald Trump or Kushal Pal Singh (of DLF fame) achieved, practice as given below.
Image credit: auremar / 123RF Stock Photo

The most famous of real estate investors share common traits. These qualities are a result of a fixation to stay ahead of the masses. Besides, it is wrong to think that only few individuals can enjoy these qualities. When you repeat exemplary work habits over a certain period of time, it manifests itself as a permanent trait of an individual’s personality and helps him even when the going gets tough, and this is what separates real winners from opportunists. If you also want to see yourself in the league of winners, here are some of the habits that you must inculcate in yourself:

Will the sales career be the right choice for you

Being in the sales career for an exceedingly long time and also having my own trading business at one point of time, apart from working in a sales organization has given me enough insight to write on it. To start with, sales career is easier for someone not hesitant by nature. While I was a team leader for a company selling financial products, I found most of the candidates who were not performing were somewhat reluctant to start a conversation with a stranger. Such employees were hesitant either because they were too shy, or had an ego large enough, which perhaps, prevented them to enter into a conversation with strangers.
